Mamianqun for Girls: A Parent’s Guide to the Horse-Face Skirt

How the mamianqun is cut, two ways we make it for girls, sizing in cm, machine-wash care, and where to buy one piece or a wholesale batch.

Among all the traditional Chinese garments adapted for children, the mamianqun — the horse-face skirt — has quietly become the most wearable. It pleats flat for storage, pairs with an ordinary sweater, and moves the way kids move. On the site it is also one of the most-asked-about pieces from wholesale buyers. This page is the practical guide: how the cut works, two ways we make it for girls, sizing in cm, care, and where to buy one piece or a classroom’s worth.

Already read the theory? Skip ahead — everything here links back to our deep-dive on what a mamianqun actually is.

What Makes a Mamianqun Different

A mamianqun is a wrap-style pleated skirt from China’s Ming and Qing dynasties. Its name comes from city fortifications: the flat, unpleated panels at the front and back of the skirt resemble the “horse-face” bastions of a city wall. Between those two smooth panels run dense knife pleats, which is why the skirt folds away so neatly and swings so freely when a child walks.

For parents, three features matter more than the history. First, the wrap waist with a tie closure adjusts as your child grows — no rigid waistband to outgrow in a season. Second, the flat front panels are where the ornament lives: woven jacquard florals, gold-thread borders, embroidery. Third, the pleats release the legs completely, so it passes the playground test that stiff party dresses fail.

Two Ways We Cut It for Girls

1. The standalone jacquard skirt

The Classic Winter line includes a deep-red mamianqun in a floral jacquard weave with metallic gold accents along each border. The red ground with blush and ivory florals reads festive at New Year, but the cut is plain enough to work year-round. This is the piece to choose if you want one traditional skirt that survives every occasion from a school cultural day to family portraits.

2. The jacket-and-skirt set

For winter, the AW2026 line pairs a cream bird-and-flower printed mamianqun with a white-pink plum-blossom jacquard plush padded jacket in a cross-collar cut. The jacket carries the warmth — plush, fur-trimmed and lined — while the skirt keeps the traditional silhouette. For families in cold climates this is the set that lets a child genuinely wear hanfu outdoors in December and January instead of changing out of it at the door.

How to Style It Day to Day

  • The sweater trick: any plain fitted knit over a mamianqun instantly works. This is how many Chinese schoolgirls wear theirs on normal days, and it is the least intimidating entry point for kids who find full traditional sets too much.
  • Festival mode: add a padded or brocade jacket, red hair accessories, and soft-soled shoes. Done — that is the complete New Year look.
  • Photography: the pleats fan beautifully when a child twirls, which makes the skirt a favorite for holiday photo sessions. Solid-color tops keep the focus on the woven front panel.

Sizing: cm to US Sizes

The mamianqun is sized by height. The wrap-tie waist gives roughly 4–6 cm of adjustment, which is why sizing up is low-risk here:

Child’s heightApprox. US size
100 cm3T–4T
110 cm4T–5T
120 cm6–7 years
130 cm8 years
140 cm10 years
150 cm12 years

Between sizes, go up. The full kids’ hanfu sizing chart covers other garment types and the “buy one size up” rule in detail.

The Parent Three-Check: Wash, Safety, Movement

Machine wash? Yes. Both skirts are woven poly-cotton blends that machine wash on cold, gentle cycle — ideally in a laundry bag to protect the jacquard and gold threads. Air dry. Full instructions are in our wash and storage guide.

Safe for toddlers? The waist closure is a soft fabric tie — no hard buckles, no neck drawstrings, no small detachable parts. Little Hanfu’s children’s line is tested to China’s GB31701-2015 Class A standard for infant and children’s textiles. The full checklist lives in our toddler safety guide.

Room to move? This is the mamianqun’s core advantage. The knife pleats open completely with each step, the wrap waist stays put through a full day, and there is no lining to bunch. Teachers running cultural-day activities regularly tell us it is the one traditional garment children refuse to take off.

Buying One — or Buying Thirty

For retail, the mamianqun and the winter set are both in the current collection, priced within our standard range of $45–120 per set. If you are a boutique, dance studio or school program coordinator, the skirt is one of our most requested wholesale items: minimum order is 12 pieces across sizes, shipping via DHL or FedEx, for ages 2–14. Wholesale terms, tier pricing and sample-order options are on the wholesale page — and with Lunar New Year on February 6, 2027, seasonal orders placed by November comfortably clear production and shipping.

One skirt, five centuries of history, and a child who can sprint in it. That is the whole pitch.
